The Toccoa Police Department will be offering a free Women's Safety Seminar at the Toccoa Stephens County Recreation Gym at the Rose Lane Complex from 6 to 8 p.m.

The seminar will offer home safety tips and show participants ways of protecting their home and family and from becoming a target for criminals.

Participants should wear casual clothes, tennis shoes or soft sole shoes.

The seminar will feature guest speakers who have expert knowledge of women's self defence and protection tactics.

The Toccoa Police Department believes that individuals have the right to act competently and decisively toward ensuring an individual's protection. This seminar is offered as a way to obtain that goal.

National statistics indicate that women are targeted the most in grocery store parking lots, followed by parking lots and garages, followed by public restrooms. However, homes are increasingly becoming a target nationwide due to the economy. Assailants tend to target women on their cell phones, searching through their purse, or engaged in other activities while they are walking.

TPD officials warn that national statistics show that criminals target women who are off guard. This seminar is offered as a way to provide knowledge and defense tactics to counter this trend.
