A/C & Heater Diet: Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer. You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment. Also, cleaning a dirty air filter can save an additional 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
Clean out your fridge: When the coils get dirty the fridge has to work harder to keep your food cool. To keep you fridge from breaking a sweat, clean the coils every 6 months. All this takes is wiping them down with a rag. As an added benefit from cleaning, your fridge will probably make less noise because it doesn't work as hard when it's clean.
Cold is cool: There are detergents on the market that don’t need warm or hot water to get your clothes clean. This will save you money and will keep CO2 out of the air.
Go with the low flow: Installed low flow shower-heads with filters. The City of Toccoa Water Department offers a FREE low-flow shower head! (Click here for info as well as additional water conservation tips.) Annually, this will save thousands of gallons of water per household. Air out your bath towels and use them twice, at least, before washing them.
Tree hugger alert! Think about planting trees, shrubs and bushes around your home. If you live in North America planting trees on the northern side of building can help to reduce heating costs. Trees that provide shade in the summer can also reduce cooling costs. In addition to the energy benefits trees can provide they remove CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow.
